A life-changing visit to a bookstore
WHAT WE DO.
OUR PROGRAMS.
Breaking the Cycle with Books (BTCWB) believes in the power of books and literacy.
We know the studies of the benefits children receive from just growing up in a home that has books. We also believe in the power of a good pizza shared among friends, enjoying time to read and browse in beautiful spaces, and in supporting local independent bookstores. A typical outing with BTCWB looks like at-risk youth from a Title 1 school to Literati bookstore in Ann Arbor. We browse, enjoy the atmosphere, and each student leaves with a book of their choice. We go to Cottage Inn Pizza after, where the staff could not be more nice or welcoming. This is followed by a mini campus tour and reading time in the Graduate Library.
Other BTCWB outings involve Detroit independent bookstores, such as Pages, and spending time in Campus Martius or the museum district. The result is always the same though; smiling faces from students who have spent quality time with each other and in the calming atmosphere of bookstores and beautiful places, each clutching a brand-new book to take home.
Empowering inner-city youth with the ability to build their own personal library during these formative years can be life changing. Kids often become what they see. When they see young people like them, spending their time reading, studying, and achieving, it shows them a path they may not have been previously exposed to.
Thank you for your time and interest in our program. We appreciate it.
